Comments: A pleasant walk turned into a disaster at a gully the locals call the “Grand Canyon”. We had been zigzagging down a narrow gully when we came upon the thirty foot deep Grand Canyon. In front of the horrified hashers, Doggy Dave slipped and seemingly in slow motion, fell into the gully. Doggy was in a bad way and unable to be moved so Saput and Induces went to Sapang Bato for help, TIB and Single Malt staying behind with Doggy. At eleven o’clock we heard the welcome sound of Saput’s London accent shouting out in the darkness. He had returned with our friend from Sapang Bato, Mike Pandan, and three of his friends. This was a mean trail to travel during the day never mind at night so how they managed it only they know. After some discussion it was decided the only way Doggy was going to get out would be by air. At first light Saput and Single Malt left to return to Sapang Bato and then CSEZ to try and arrange for a helicopter to get Doggy out. He was airlifted out some twenty hours after the accident where it was found that his left leg was broken above and below the knee, his left wrist was shattered and that twenty stitches were needed for head wounds. Thanks go to Mel “Smells” Troth, Mike Gomez and his staff at Omni Aviation, Col Diego B Dasallas of the Philippine Air Force, the helicopter crew of the 205th Rescue Wing PAF, Mike Pandan and his friends from Sapang Bato. A hike never to be forgotten but for all the wrong reasons.
