Comments: Starting at Patling beside the
O’Donnell River at the bottom end of Crow Valley that used to be a US Air
Force bombing range we headed across some sugar cane fields, over a
tributary of the Bangut river and up a steep hill overlooking the
O’Donnell. Here we lost the trail and were directed on our way by a group
of Negritos. We followed a winding jungle track along, then down the other
side of the hill to a Negrito village by the Bangut river. Here we had
lunch while Induces cast a critical eye over the local talent. We walked
up the Bangut for a kilometre before finding another narrow trail to take
us to the top of the opposite ridge. We found ourselves on a carabao cart
trail that took us on a great loop so we were going the opposite direction
that we wanted to. When we were talking about going over another ridge the
Major said no he was going downhill thank you very much. Umbrella held at
regimental height he marched off never to be seen again on this hike. Well
we did go over another ridge into Kalangitan. Because darkness was near we
hired trikes to take us back to MacArthur Highway and eventually the Anchorage Inn. The
idea behind this hike was to find a way to Dap Dap. Next time we will try
it from the Dap Dap side.
